No message left, not a good sign of legitimacy; the number is associated with the IRS and debt collection. I have no collections or issues with the IRS, so... most likely a scam?

CBE Group claiming to be a collections agency for the IRS. I verified that indeed there is a company hired by the IRS to do exactly that. However, the phone number listed for them is different from the one that called me. They knew my name, and my phone number (Obviously). When I pressed them for verification information for what city and state I was in, they could not tell me. This number does not match that of the CBE Group that is advertised by the IRS. They do not provide any information to verify who they are. They cannot confirm any information outside of your name and phone number (Which any of us can get over the open web). Plus, they have not called back when I told them "Okay, you're a scam, but you have a nice day"

If you call the number back, you receive a recording stating, We're sorry your number cannot be completed as dialed.

It is a collections company called the CBE Group out if IA, that the IRS uses. They are brutal and will hound you to death. They will even contact your family members, your neighbors, your friends and even your employers all past and present to get to you. You will need to send them a 'cease and desist' letter telling them to stop or you will go to the FTC and to the attorney general and you will press criminal and civil charges against them.

The IRS never calls and does not contract out. They do their own collections. This number is a scam.

It is the IRS. I checked the number and it is the same number on the paperwork that we should have all received. They do ask for personal information which males everything a little uncomfortable. They are legit and if you don't want to give your info over the phone then give them a call with the reference number in the letter you received. Its a 3rd party company that the IRS hires to collect debts. I called the IRS and they confirmed that they do not collect the debts themselves, they hire third party. IT IS THE IRS!!

Stated they were a debt collection associated with the irs. I asked how much I owed and they said I had to verify my soc sec number first. I don’t owe the irs they owe me...... nice try

I have received calls, no message left. Looking at the previous comments here, this actually seems legit. About a month ago I got a letter from the IRS notifying my that my debt to them (which I do have and am aware of) has been sold to a 3rd party collections agency. A couple weeks later I got a letter from a collection agency called CBE informing me of the debt from IRS. The IRS does not call about debts, but the debt is no longer with the IRS once they have sold it off to a collections agency. I used to work for a collection agency, and they legally cannot leave information regarding debt owed on a voicemail, which is why no messages are left. Just because they call and don't leave a message doesn't mean it's a scam.
